Tomato seed germination
« on: February 26, 2008, 11:59 »
I'm astounded, 4 days from sowing and they're nearly all up! It's my first time from seed and I wasn't quite expecting them to be so fast.

Are they too early? I've kept half the packet (Gardeners Delight) just in case. They're indoors at the moment. I have a greenhouse but it is unheated.
First timer, NOT enjoying the backache anymore!

As long as you can keep them frost free then no it's not to early, mine went in  on Sunday.  You could always bring them in from the greenhouse if a frost is forecast.
When they have their first true leaves then it's time to pot on into 3" pots. Don't feed them until first truss ( flowers ) are opening

Tomatoes are a great thing to grow from seed and as you say, very quick to germinate.  I've got Black Cherry, Tigrella, Sungella and Moneymaker at two inches high now.  Just a few of each on the windowsill.
Cheese makes everything better.

I always plant extra seeds in case some don't make it, but they always make it, so I've usually got loads of extra plants. I give away quite a few and am still stuck with way more than I've room for, but plant them anyway. I simply love fresh tomato salads twice a day.
This year I'm planting: German Gold, German Strawberry, Sweet 100, a grape tom variety called Riesenstraube, Mortgage Lifter, Persimmon, Amish Paste, Vivia Italia Paste, Paul Robeson (a black russian) and Jaune Flamme. All but the Sweet 100 are heirloom varieties and very flavourful.
Can't wait to sit outside this summer and eat them right off the vine. Oink.

I've had mine in the conservatory for a few weeks now and they are about 5 inches tall now and ready to go into bigger pots! I only planted a few as expected I was doing them far too early but thought I'd try anyway! and I had some luck. gonna sow the rest of them now!

I planted golden pearldrop on the 5th and so far only about 1 quarter have germinated, if that, a little disappointing as there were few in the packet making them quite expensive per seed, but then I only ever keep two or three plants for myself anyway and freecycle the rest so at the end of the day it doesn't matter too much!!
