Turnips instead of swedes?
« on: August 24, 2023, 09:01 »
I haven't grown or bought a decent tasting swede for years and wondered about trying turnips next year instead. Whaddya think, and any recommendations for something with a bit of sweetness about it?
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Kohl Rabi is a great alternative - you get the sweetness and the texture, but not the earthy pong!

Some old boys I used to know grew a huge type of black radish - name forgotten - but a Long White Icicle is a nice one to grow, as is Mino Early! All are great substitutes!

Black Spanish is one black skinned winter radish. I made the mistake of growing it in the first half of the year, my word it was hot, like a hot chilli. I then learned that in Mexico they grate them over tacos etc. Make me want to grow them again. Next year maybe

They're the ones, Snow!

Thank you for reminding me - they're fabulous with a bit of Cheddar cheese!
