Turnips & swedes in modules?
« on: May 12, 2012, 22:28 »
Planted Turnip seeds at the lottie, germinated lovely, then got completely devestated by Flea Beetle before they got beyond the first leaf stage.

Wondered whether it is possible to start them (and swedes) off in modules or paper pots to give them a fighting chance?
If so is it ok to not plant them out until the first true leaves are set, or longer?

Alternatively is there an effective way to deal with flea beetle?

Thanks

Rob

I grow these in modules, sometimes even potting on to small pots before planting out.

Try a quick internet search for more information: Here's a link that might be interesting: flea beetle

Both are stem veg rather than true roots so you should be fine  :)

I've got turnips in a raised bed at home that I started in modules and they are doing well.  Sowed about 6 seeds in a clump in each cell (I use biggish ones that give 12 cells to a normal sized seed tray) and planted out when they had about 2 sets of true leaves.

Swedes were a disaster for me last year, so sowed modules a week or so ago.  I'm going to thin those to 1 plant per cell and plant them out when they have got going a bit  :)

Turnips (and parsnips) sown direct yesterday. Today I'll try some in modules or paper pots.
One way or another I should get some results.... I hope.

Swedes are also going into modules - just a few.

Thanks for the advice all.

Fair few weeds on the plot (newish) so probably not helping with the Flea Beetle.

Module sowing for me next week then!  :)

Thanks

Rob
