I found the plastic ones (love "Dalek Bin" as a description) rot down pretty fast anyway - when it's just household waste and a small amount of garden bits, I just pile it in on top and scrape it out from the hatch.  It's never got too full, and the worms come up and do a pretty good job of keeping it all mixed up (in fact, if you don't empty it, they'll empty it for you, all into the surrounding soil - mine is next to the rhubarb in the garden for that reason).

If you have a big garden, lawns, or an allotment, you're going to need something bigger anyway!
