Are all eggs fertile?
« on: February 24, 2008, 10:33 »
Now we have Colin and have seen him ´do his job´ does that mean all the hens eggs are fertile?  We have no broody hens. If the eggs are fertile, can we put the newly laid eggs in an incubator? if so, how quick do we have to be after laying?
Hope this doesn´t sound too daft!

best is 2-4 days after being laid, but they will need turning  daily before you set them.

no promises they are fertile, he could be a jaffa   but with a good candler you should be able to tell at 4 days in the incubator.... unless they are brown eggs.

unless you want to pay £60 for a high density egg lume Candler. then all you can do is set them and hope for the best.

and pray none are infertile or die early as they go of and explode, bang and you can end up in a salmonella shower

Think I will let nature takes its course and wait for a broody hen in that case!
Thanks
