Protecting sweetcorn from critters
« on: February 26, 2023, 14:01 »
Does anyone have a system that works and isn't a shedload of faff to do?

Sweetcorn is the riskiest thing to grow on our allotment - the pesky local badgers got most of mine last year.

Was thinking this year of buying some pointed fence posts and wrapping debris netting around that, but will consider anything.

we had the same problem 2 years ago as we grow our sweet corn on a raised bed the old badgers had a lovely feast they cleared the lot so we put up some chicken wire all round the next bed we intended to grow our sweet corn and had no more problems they feasted on another poor chaps sweet corn I did tell him to put up some defence to stop the badgers and he decided against doing that he said our wire fence round the raised bed was like a fort with a big grin on his face but he wasn't laughing when the badger cleared his sweet corn  but I had a big grin on my face at the time

Chain link fence (or something with similarly close wires), with added barbed wire?  Briefly looking at UK law, I guess it would depend on how close the allotment is to a public highway.  Also, whatever rules the allotment has.

RWs idea does seem easier!

I don't have badgers thankfully, they are really hard to protect against. An extremely strong fence would be your best bet.

Deer, rabbits, and mainly pigeons are the bane of my allotment

How about circles of carpet about 10" across, cut through to the middle and placed halfway up the stems of the sweetcorn (like rat rings on ships mooring lines).

Cheers,  Tony.

No one's mentioned squirrels yet. They cleared my sweetcorn one year. I've got trees nearby, so my corn isn't even safe from attack from above....

Two years running the Squirrels attacked mine, they did not even wait for it to ripen last year. Going to try some netting this year but not confident that will stop them.

Lost mine two years in a row.  Not sure whether it was the squirrels or the rats but I wasn't happy.  We built a cage with chicken wire to keep the beasts out.  Wee mouse still gets in though.  Thankfully it waited until the winter and I had already picked what I could.
