Outdoor cucumber
« on: August 26, 2022, 14:49 »
Hi, bit early I know but looking for suggestions on varieties for next year, mine always seem to have hard skin and some bitterness, especially if left a bit too long before picking. Tried Marketmore 76 and Chinese Slagen this year. Much appreciated :)

This year I was very happy with what kitchengardenseeds.com sells as Pepinex English Greenhouse Cucumber. It produced well, no seeds, no bitterness.  Mine has an odd habit of growing in a coil when young, and straightening out as the fruit matures (the fruits were fine though).

I'm sure one of your seed companies has the same seed type.

Thanks Subversive, looks just the thing and can get from one of the suppliers I use - Kings Seeds. I've got a cold greenhouse but prefer to grow outside. Might try both next season :)

I have grown 3 varieties outside in pots this year and all have done well and taste very good.
Telegraph, La Diva and Wautoma.

We grow Burpless outdoors (and in). It's marketed as bitter free and always does well for us.

Thanks AnneB, always good to have options :) Think I've tried Burpluss before Blewit can't remember how it did as for last few years I've been lucky enough to have plenty of free seeds (mixed blessings) so looking forward to choosing specific varieties next season

I'll second the recommendation for La Diva if you're happy with a "mini-ish" variety. Only had issues with bitterness when I've grown in the PT. Outside have been fine.
