Outdoor Cucumber
« on: November 19, 2010, 19:37 »
Hi,
I am looking for an outdoor variety of Cucumber (my G/house is just too small).
Can anyone give me some recommendations of outdoor cues that they have grown with success in the past. As a guide I live in North Cheshire not far from Manchester.

Thanks FB

We are that much further north than you FB, but we grew Marketmore this year. They were planted outside - 3 plants in a "sheltered" very sunny spot - but they just weren't managing, so we rescued the last one into the potting/tool shed which had to get baled out to accommodate the plant! ::) Brilliant crop! :D

Marketmore grows well outside.  This year I also grew Crystal Apple/Lemon and La Diva outdoors and all 3 did very well - mind, the weather was exceptionally good for growing them outside.  I planted them where they were protected and in a warm sheltered spot in a sunny location.

This was my first year growing on an allotment and I had very good success with Burpless Tasty Green.  I sowed in pots in May in a south facing spare bedroom then planted outdoors and got loads of tasty cucumbers later on in the season.  Could just have been beginner's luck though!

I'm in Stockport so probably not far from you

I have grown chrystal apple outdoors and we are in a very exposed part of the world. They have a beautiful flavour.

I grew one called Minature White (available from www.realseeds.co.uk).

Last year I tried it in the greenhouse and it was a monster and not that productive, so decided outdoors was best this year.  It did really well and produced loads of crispy textured fruits - bit like Crystal Apple. I gave a couple of plants to other plot holders and they were raving about them and have both saved seeds.

Wautoma is really good- you can pick them small for pickles or grow on to a large cuke size. Really prolific.

Next year, I'm gonna try a few varieties outdoors- have been collecting seed of varieties as I want to try them all: (have i ever mentioned i have a scarily large seed collection?? lol) :

Paris Picking, West Indian Gherkin, Miniature White, Wautoma (my ol' reliable), Marketmore, Wisonsin Pickling SMR 58, and Armenian Yard Long.
I have Burpless Tasty seeds too, but they're the only F1 ones of the bunch... not sure if I'll grow them myself yet, or give those plants away to friends....

No idea which will do best for me on my plot yet, but all the above were recommended to me for growing outside. (Gonna be doing a LOT of picking next year hopefully! I just adore pickled cucumbers and gherkins!!) Hope that list helps, I know people who've grown the above in Ireland and various parts of UK and had good success, but i guess it depends really on your soil etc...

I have grown Windy gherkins  for 2 years , lots of fruit the first year but the plants did not really get going this year. IMO there are better gherkins for pickling but the hens really liked them fresh. :)
