Most new varieties aren't, but Tasty burpless green is a good number.

Is it best to buy started plants (if so where from) or can they be grown outside from seeds?

From what i've been told you sow them outside but I'm going to start mine indoors which is pretty much what I do for everything else

I've just sown indoors some Thompson & Morgan 'Masterpiece' (RHS AGM)
seeds :) Best picked small, they look old fashioned, not smooth skinned but I'm hoping they are really tasty :tongue2:

You can sow them outdoors, end of May, but I never do up here, anything happens to them, there is not much time to re-sow.

As you only need 2-3 plants, unless besotted with them, you can find a corner for a few pots for a few weeks, really and sow indoors.

They're the sort I've got.
& I concur with Gobs about indoor sowing, (damn).
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I sometimes grow Chrystal Apple.

They're a round yellow type,a bit like a small tennis ball, but really juicy and highly prolific.

I always sow indoors and make sure that the seed is sown on it's edge rather than on its side, this seems to speed up germination as there is less resistance for the seed from the soil as it emerges. :D

I like Burpless Tasty Green and have done well with them outdoors on the plot

I start them off indoors and then plant them out in containers with some support to scramble up

We grew Marketmore and Crystal Apple last year, really good crop from both varieties.  This year we will stick with Marketmore as they were more to our liking.

Years ago in the UK most gardeners started their seeds indoors, then planted them directly into smaller all glass cold frames. When the weather got warm enough, the frame tops would come off for the summer so the vines could sprawl everywhere and crop more heavily.

I tried growing outdoor cucumbers last year. Started them off in pots and had some lovely healthy plants, planted them out near the end of May and then we had a frost 30th May and killed the lot, no cucumbers.  :(  I shall be waiting until much later this year to plant mine out.

What do they taste like? Do outdoor fruit taste like the indoor grown fruit?

I have in the past felt like cucumber doesn't really have a taste but then i've only bought them from Tesco
