Not quite 360 degrees!
« on: July 26, 2022, 13:18 »
Good afternoon everyone,
I've never had so many curly runner beans!  Has anyone else noticed this?

Cheers,  Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

I have never had curly runner beans, but in the past I have had a few examples of curly climbing French beans.  For some reason these were all yellow varieties, including Kentucky Wonder Wax, Neckargold and Marvel of Venice.
No idea why though.

Quite a few here! It may be that they out-grew their sides and with awkward watering, have just gone flat out without timing themselves properly! It's the same with tomatoes here, they developed their stems far too quickly...

Also, the beans all flowered at once with this heat, so we'll have a glut, then far fewer later on!

I've got some 'late arrivals' in place so we may get some sort of succession, but I'm not counting on it happening!

I sometime get curly beans.  Usually it's heat, not enough water.

Sometime I think is a lack of fertilizer too.  They fix their own N, but can't do that with P or K.  I see less curly beans when they get some 13-13-13 applied.

Mmm. In the past when I grew climbing French beans I found they grew curly at the ends outside but straight when planted in my greenhouse.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
