Tomatoes
« on: July 12, 2020, 10:42 »
I’m a newbie to tomatoes. Can anyone tell me if this is normal? It’s at the base of the plants, they are hard to touch and do not come away when rubbed. Any advice will be great TIA.

Heather.

They are new adventitious roots growing, just top up the compost level to cover them, so the plant can draw up more moisture and nutrients.
Many of us plant our tomatoes deeply, just so the plants can do this easily :)

Nothing to worry about perfectly normal these are aerial roots. You could of you want top dress the plants with compost to cover them it would actually help the plant.

These are just fine, Heather!

Old boys I used to learn from often buried the roots of their toms a foot deep, or just planted them horizontally so that the stems all did what you have, but managed to get a load more stuff as Mum says above!

I'd be proud of your toms! Excellent result there!
