Sweetcorn cobs not fully pollinated.
« on: August 29, 2018, 13:24 »
Re- my post in the recent topic of one cob per plant in my greenhouse, I've just added that OH took two off today and is not a happy bunny because they're not fully-pollinated despite me doing the usual feeding, watering every few days, and tapping the stems for a week when the tassels are ready. Has anyone else had the same problem or is it something I've done?
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Good evening Goosegirl,

I've found exazctly the same thing, I think it's something we will have to live with.
Next year I'm going to physically massagea silk array with a seed head and see if that makews any difference.

I've also found some members are getting 2-3-4 cobs per plant!  I've already got my Lark F1 seeds for next year from the company because there was such a bad germinationrate.  I'll try "Wizard" seeds after that.  Mine (ours) are all tidierd up and in the freezer.  Cheers,  Tony.

I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

I have had a bit of a mixture. Some bursting and an equal number not worth bothering with due to poor pollination. What I have got are jolly tasty.

despite other veg not doing so well I have to say this has been the best year for harvesting our sweet corn
most of the crop where good cobs only had a few unusable

we grew them on a bed of horse manure in a razed bed with a wire fence round it to stop the badgers helping themselves to them like last year the variety we grew was golden hide quite large cobs and very sweet tasting
