Sweetcorn producing pollen but no cobs showing
« on: July 15, 2023, 19:58 »
The tops of my sweetcorn are releasing pollen, but very few have cobs on. Will nature balance things out?

I think I see some corn silk (top of a developing cob) in the center of that photo?  It should make no difference if the male flower spike (tassel) is chopped off of that plant.  Adjacent tassels on other plants can pollinate it.

That's just about the only silk tassel though. Will the other plants which are already releasing pollen get silks soon?

It is hard to say from the photo.  You can usually feel a swelling where a female flower shoot (potential corn ear) is developing. It is not unusual to see tassel development before the silk might be fully apparent.  You can see at this website https://agcrops.osu.edu/newsletter/corn-newsletter/2022-18/corn-growth-and-development-crop-staging that tasseling begins in the vegetative stages of growth, followed shortly after by silking in the reproductive stage (those stages are transitional, and overlap).

They often seem as if they have got their timing completely out of sync  but they usually manage to get sorted out in time to get cobs on each plant.
That's why it is important to grow them quite close together in a block - rather than in a row, so that wind can blow the pollen over the other plants. Any day that there wasn't wind, I'd walk around tapping the stalks and hoping that would help  :D

No problems today if they are relying on the wind to help with pollination. Fingers crossed they will produce in the end.
Keep digging

I grow mine in the greenhouse and for the last two weeks have been tapping the stalks with a long piece of lath so as to release the pollen from the emerging tassels onto the silks. When I started, the silks weren't showing but have seen this before so just carried on. Wow! Such a joy to see clouds of fine pollen going all over everywhere including me!
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Mine are almost 6ft and not showing anything close to silks yet. The tassels look really mature now too, turning yellow. Hopeing there will be some overlap as I'm growing loads this year!
