Peach Leaf Curl
« on: April 30, 2018, 08:25 »
Hi,
I have 2 Peach trees and 2 Nectarines that have been in the ground since Feb 2016, first year fine now they have Leaf Curl and are looking very sorry for themselves. They are amongst lots of other types of healthy Fruit trees and no other problems visible. Any ideas how to treat them.
Regards

It only affects trees of the genus Prunus so not all fruit trees will be affected - plums and cherries are susceptible though. Also some varieties are more tolerant/resistant to the disease than others - that is probably why you have it on some trees and not others. Some thoughts:

Copper fungicides (still available to amateurs I think) this year to contain the infection and some protection from the rain for next year seems to be the most you can do now your trees are infected. Keep it well-fed to maintain vigour.

Removing and destroying infected leaves before the fungus produces spores is time may help a bit but the fungus is not just on the leaves

Taphrina deformans is the Latin name so Googling that should throw up some useful info.

As Dr Pepper says a copper fungicide like Bordeaux mix is the thing to use. It is best applied during the winter months when the tree is dormant. This kills the spores of the fungus which arrive in the rain and when the new leaves emerge in the spring you will have much less problems.

Bordeaux mixture has been illegal to use since 2015 in the EU.

Vitax copper mixture is still registered. Not Bordeaux but should be a fair approximation in terms of disease suppression. As jambop says it’s a bit shutting the stable door-ish!!
