Any ideas if this will kill off nasty soil diseases - my theory, but will it actually help it - we had terrible blight last year and club root on my roots.

... it doesn't kill off clubroot  just slows down over winter.  My friend who has been plagued by clubroot has a theory - forget growing summer brassicas and aim for the overwintering ones.  The brussels that he grew that were harvested over Christmas looked fine, but apparently when he lifted them up recently, signs of clubroot were just showing.

That's really helpful paintedlady, sometimes it's those handy hints based on experience that turn out to be the most accurate.

I don't have clubroot but agree that frost isn't gonna kill it.

Nor does it kill blight - we usually get -15degs C or below and blight returns every year.

Sorry.

Hi All

Apparently you can leave the ground brassica free for 20 -25 years and club root might not reappear.

A hint I picked up from gardeners world was to mix some home made compost, lime (if needed) and crushed washed egg shells together then plant the brassicas in that - they should develop good roots in the compost mix. It worked for me last year, it didn't stop the pidgeons & mice though!

Good luck.   :)

We may have weeds but we have no mice!
