morning all    a lot of people on our allotment plant north to south   i mostly plant east to west   reason   i dont know   how do you plant an why  ty all

The theory is that n/s everything gets some sunshine, e/w only one side gets any sunshine.

Probably does not matter with low growers like onions, carrots but I can see that it could make a difference with tall growers like runner beans and peas.

I grow n/s but only because that suits my plot.

I've grown both ways, and it doesn't seem to make any difference - not even any difference on the 'wrong' side of the bean frame  ;)

I've grown both ways and not noticed any difference as regards sun for tomatoes, for example. However, it does make a difference for me in terms of exposure to wind and I now align everything except sweetcorn (grown in a block) east to west, as the worst winds usually blow in a westerly direction here.

It's easier to manage shading on my plot if it's planted n-s, but anything planted on the northern edge of the plot is either tall fruit/veg or a climber - works well for me.
