Curled onions.
« on: May 30, 2017, 13:16 »
After 2 weeks away most of my onions have curled up leaves. Investigation found tiny caterpillars and some pupae of leek moths.

Not sure how much this will affect the onions but it looks as though we are in for a good leek moth year.

That could well be allium leaf miner, as opposed to leek moth. Either way, looks like something else we're going to have to grow under fleece!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

My leeks are under enviromesh again this year, next to the carrots, so no big deal in that sense, but I just don't think I can stand another crop, especially such a big space using crop as onions, being under cover.
I'm going to have to do a proper inspection of my onions tomorrow.

Allium leaf miner is a fly and the grubs are maggots with no head or legs. The pupae are brown and smooth and hidden within the plant, often well down in the stem.

Leek moths are moths and the grubs are a caterpillar with a head and legs. The pupae spin a loose net like cocoon on a leaf.

Mine are definitely leek moths.

Either way, my onions look like that too!!!

I think I am going to be buying more enviromesh. Already have some for the leeks, which are not yet planted out.

Or is debris netting sufficient to keep the leek moth and allium leaf miner flies at bay?

Our site's riddled with ALM and has been for the last three or four years. it's disheartening to lose everything but growing under enviromesh (with 0.6mm weave) is the only way so far to grow a crop. I tried curry powder to throw the fly off the scent but that didn't work either.
