Jerusalem artichokes
« on: May 05, 2017, 13:53 »
Hullo fellow gardeners.

I planted, my first try, some Jerusalem artichokes about a month ago and yes the weather has been quite cold but still no sign of anything emerging. Do they usually take a long time to emerge or are they rotting in the ground do you think?

Mine are just showing, they are at least 20 years old. My problem is that none of my family care for them and the following year after I thought I'd dug them all out and binned them, those damned shoots reappear. Yours will probably appear in the next week or so as they are virtually indestructable

As Alan says they're as tough as nails, so I wouldn't be overly worried. I've been in a similar situation and not seen any growth till June before now. Mine are currently about an inch tall.

All afor said being true, it's also the case that you can lose these as new planting affair to slugs and sorts. Dig up some and see, what's happening.

Thanks for answers. I went out and dug one up this evening. I found a root that was still intact (firmer than when I put it in because the roots were a bit soft at the time) and just starting to sprout, so there is still hope.

When planting a new vegetable I always try and eat the produce, hopefully home grown, beforehand.

Unfortunately I didn't stick to this very helpful practise before I planted my artichoke tubers. I didn't like them, no-one in my circle of friends and family liked them. Four years later I dug them all out (again) and fed them to pigs. At least they ate them, they supplied no opinion.

There's a good reason why they're referred to as fartichokes

Grow them in tubs - easier to harvest and much less likely to try and take over......

Phew - I am glad I saw this one. I planted 11 ages ago. Three are about 3 inches tall, one just showing but nothing from the others.

Any advice on watering would be appreciated.

What's the maths here?

I would dare to guess, they are doing fine.

Sorry, I have not said anything about my JAs lately but I kept getting false alarms.  Every time I saw a plant coming up I had never seen before I thought, this is it. To no avail. But over the last week five of them are shooting up like made. They are definitely JAs. I can't believe it has taken them two and a half months to emerge!
