I was lifting some today and seemed to think that they were deeper than previous years.  

Does any one know whether the tubers are formed above the parent tuber, below it, or both?

Seems to make sense though - to help the plant spread outwards through time.  I guess the deeper ones must have come from smaller tubers getting buried instead of lifted.
