Amazing sweetcorn
« on: April 13, 2017, 16:06 »
I have just cleared out a dilapidated shed on the plot. There were glass jars containing various seed packets, including one for
Kelvedon Sweetheart sweetcorn which was unopened, the seed company is Hurst. I cant read the date on the pack. It occurred to me that I haven't seen that brand around so I did a bit of internet searching and it would seem they were wound up in 1987. So I chitted the seed and some of them are shooting!!! They would have been subject to extremes of temperature over the years. I will grow them on, not that I expect a crop just it would seem wrong not to!!!

ooooh how exciting!   Amazing that they have germinated!  Usually, sweetcorn has to be fresh seed. Unless the seed company just spin us that line  :D

Never heard of that company or that variety.  Sounds lovely though, Kelvedon Sweetheart. You could grow some Kelvedon Wonder peas to keep em company  :)

Nature is really amazing, the code for viable life surviving in such circumstances. Kind of appropriate for Easter time!! Funnily enough I do have some Kelvedon Wonder peas on the go, these were also left on the plot but are only 2 years old!

Hope you get some good plants.
Try and save some seed if you can, doing a bit of an online search it appears Kelvdon wonder Sweetcorn no longer exists.
Walk a mile in a mans shoes and you will be a mile away with his shoes.

I will try, the variety was a F1 hybrid though so I suppose it wouldn't come true, which is a shame. All 22 seeds have now chitted, so I will pot them up tomorrow and see what happens!
