garlic
« on: December 29, 2016, 20:18 »

    Evening All

I was thinking of giving garlic a try this coming year. I have been told to start them of in
pots in the greenhouse. Is this right? and will there be enough light and warmth in
my unheated greenhouse in march. None to balmy up here at that time.
keep on digging

I put 33 cloves in modules just this week. They are outside on a bench. Hopefully they are getting a good frosting which help to make it form into cloves instead of growing as a bulb. They'll be fine outdoors.

I'd plant them in modules/small pots asap. but I'd keep them in the greenhouse for now.
They do need cold weather, but they'll get cold enough in the greenhouse with the heavy frosts we're having now. -3 in mine last night Brrrr.

That's what I did with mine last Winter, as the soil was too wet to plant them in the Autumn.

My garlic is keeping its head down at the moment, the spears are waiting just below the surface which has been frozen solid last couple of days.

I planted it later this year, mid-November rather than October. Last year at this time the plants were already 3 or 4 inches high, but then took a battering in the gales, losing leaves, so I've tried to slow it down this year.

I always plant mine directly into the ground, usually between mid October to Mid November, at the moment they're a couple of inches high. Seeing advice given about starting in modules made me think. Last year, with all the rain mine were sitting in pools of water, needless to say, crop was disastrous. May give modules a try next year, or do I have time to try some this year, any thoughts?

If there is none at the garden centre or it looks a bit past it, there will be a fresh batch in very soon.

The autumn planting ones arrive around September with the spring bulbs and the spring planting ones arrive over Christmas or early in the new year, with the summer stuff like dahlias,  You can plant the spring ones into modules straight away.  I've done it before and it works well  :)
