ducks (not hens)
« on: January 23, 2008, 21:28 »
I know this is called the hen house and all that but is anyone interested in/know about ducks? We recently acquired two Aylesburies for laying (but they turned out to be boys and so they'll be sunday dinner instead).

Looking for anyone with an old (but working) outdoor grain hopper and water trough thing they would like to sell on?

Pegs, there are hens, cockerals, ducks, drakes, geese and sometimes even bees and goats in the henhouse :D

We talk about ducks here too pegs.

But we do not allow any selling on the forums for money.  Swap and give away only  :D

Okay - now I'm feeling really bad about the whole duck eating thing. They are beautiful and gorgeous and everything -and the piccy is grand. But if I eat it from the supermarket then what better than eating one I have reared myself?  Am I just too hard nosed?

Sadly we don't have enough space for ducks that don't contribute to the family table in some way so they need to make way for girlie layers.... and what better end than a lovely roast, all that crispy skin, with some tatties from the plot? hmmm sense I may get chased from the henhouse if I carry on.

Thanks for help anyway.

Of course you won't get chased from the henhouse Pegs!  It's just that we have a load of softy tofty's on here.

You enjoy your ducks while they are alive, and enjoy them when they are dinner!!!

We are getting some day old meat chicks once my POL's are sold, they will be little and cuddley for a while, then they'll go in the freezer!  :D

Oh Pegs you really shouldn't feel bad about eating them, you know they've had a good life and will doubtless have had better conditions that ones you'd buy in a supermarket.

I wouldn't be able to eat them myself, but I'm vegetarian so that's different. I quite admire people who do rear their own animals for meat, in my mind it's better than just going down to the supermarket and buying a cut of whatever meat.

It sounds to me that you are being practical, and that isn't a bad thing, is it?

Oh lovie I didn't mean any harm

I can't eat mine I am too soft but I do believe that if you have cared for an animal and given it a good life free of stress and hassle you have the right to enjoy it as a meal.

I just wish I could, free range duck is so expensive but I can't ever see me eating my "kids"

Enjoy them now and later with a good conscience that they have lived well

I'm a veggie  and I couln't eat any of my gang but I know that people like us rear and treat our animals with humanity even if they are meant for the table. At least your ducks will have a good life Pegs! I'm not against meat eaters just cruel farming.
