Fig Positioning
« on: September 09, 2016, 18:14 »
I thought it was Brunswick, but it appears I've ordered Brown turkey. I had intended to fan train it on the west wall of my sunken patio but I'm wondering now if it would be better on the back wall of one of the greenhouses and left to it's own devices.

Figgy people - your experiences please.

As long as the fig gets plenty of sun they grow like weeds, 12ft tall weeds ! :)
Shading of the greenhouse may be a problem when it gets to that size .

Make sure you make a bund wall around the roots (Paving slabs?) to restrict the roots, or you tend to get lots of growth rather than figs.
You really also need to be able to get to it to prune it, to keep it productive, so perhaps not near to glass?

I'd planned on it being inside the GH (realising I didn't make that clear).  The GH gets more light but would probably be colder as it lacks the radiant heat given from the wall.  Constraining the roots isn't an issue either way but I don't want lots of green leafy an no figs.

Not overly bothered about the loss of GH space and the huge conifer next door now shades it in spring and the early morning  The GH gable wall is 8ft wide and around 8ft high so I guess big enough to train as fan ?

You can keep them quite small, but they'd need a lot of pruning. Keeping the roots inside a big sunken pot will help, but will require careful watering and regular feeding.
