Split squashes!
« on: August 31, 2016, 15:00 »
My butternuts have split!  :(
I expect its lack of water, but I have three large squashes with splits in the sides.
Is it possible to salvage anything of these beasties?

I was thinking I could peel and cook them asap and freeze the flesh. What does anyone elase think, please?

Yes, you could but, if they aren't ripe they won't taste the same as a ripe one.

If they are ripe they will callouse over the split and store alright for a month or so ! Make sure the split gets lots of sunlight to dry it out and use the split ones first . :)

Thanks for the advice.  I'll put them in the window sill for a couple of days and see how they go!  They are pretty ripe and the splits have some callouses already.
Note to self: Keep watering!
