Summer Storm
« on: August 20, 2016, 11:19 »
I've just propped up the runner bean wigwam with some laths and string, because it was beginning to lean at a crazy angle, removed the greenhouse autovent to close the window and closed the doors up.
All battened down now.

I hope the storm doesn't spoil too many of our crops - stay safe everybody!

Gusts up to 30mph this morning, so not too bad here so far MoS.

Munty frame is made from angle iron so should be OK, although that's not to say the runner beans will enjoy the wind if it does get stronger.

Wind is from the south west which is a relatively safe direction for my GH because the door is at the north end. Auto vent is on the leeward side so I'll leave it to it (it's only open a few inches anyway at the moment, although it's a bit like the proverbial fiddler's elbow with the sun going in and out all the time.  ;))

The block of Sweetcorn plants has canes and strings running around and diagonally through them, so shouldn't be leaning too far...
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I dozed off after lunch, and when I woke up, it had all passed over!

Still a bit blowy, but it helps the sweetcorn, and the beans are still standing at home...

Teacup - storm..:0]

I used decent-sized bamboo canes for my munty frame, but took the precaution of driving a re-bar into each length for strength and durability. The added advantage is that the steel bars can be driven into the ground as far as needs be for sturdiness but the canes are all that's visible. Much better asthetically.

I'm thrilled with it's capacity to take the stress of full crop or wind without buckling at the knees.

Grow lights for early germination;
Blow away on NE facing terrace for hardening off;
Small potager 90sq.m at 300metres
No-dig method, intensive planting and incorporating permaculture principles.

By mid afternoon things were still upright despite some serious blows ... hope it all is still!

My munty frame was leaning a little so I braced it with an extra cane yesterday morning, which seems to have done the trick.  Luckily  ::) :ohmy:
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
