Help finding a particular tomato variety, please?
« on: March 18, 2016, 08:53 »
I'm looking for a specific tomato (just to be difficult!)

It looks like one of the heavily ridged "coeur de boeuf" types, but it is a cherry.  I found it in a mixed cherry tom pack at the supermarket, and compared to other supermarket varieties it is very sweet, and as it is a meat tomato, it doesn't fall apart  and make your salad sloppy.

If it's not an F1, do you think I could just use the seeds from one (if I have one left?) or does anyone have any idea of what it could be?

Thanks!

Googling, I can only see the large beefsteak one Casey.  Those you bought are probably F1, but I'd try them anyway, just to see what you get.

I grew floridity for years.  I found out after the first year that they were F1, and the first year the resulting fruits were the right shape, but much larger, after a couple of years, they seemed to go back to being the small ones I like and still tasted nice

But I hope you find some seeds!

I would also give the saved seeds a go. After all, there is not much to lose and they may be just what you want. In the meanwhile, someone may recognise your description and come up with a name.

No idea what variety it is, but if you have one with seeds then it has got to be worth sowing some as a trial. Even if it is a hybrid there is a possibility that if you resow the seeds you may get some that are the same, they would be in the minority the bulk being similar to the respective 'grandparents'. If you have got the space sow some and see what you get.

Nope, it's not the tomatoberry mum.  Hopefully I still have one left in the fridge, and I'll take a photo tonight.

Casey, I just found some pics of a small ribbed cherry called Ceylon - could they be the ones?

So, despite having at least 3 in at least 2 different boxes, I have come to the conclusion they must have been mutations, as in the literature of the provider they aren't included in the mixed cherry selection.

I'm not sure if they were a normal "Coeur de boeuf" that had been picked when very small then artificially ripened, or if they were a true mutation.

Totally kicking myself now, for not saving the seed when I first saw them.

Of course I'm now thinking that I may have to grow a Coeur de boeuf tomato for salads at it was so very tasty! (I've never had one before as I wasn't keen on the ruffled shape, but I can change!!!)

Perhaps you have had the Tomate petit coeur de boeuf variety
These are smaller versions of the coeur de boeuf and you see them a lot on brittany french markets.

Not quite a cheety, but certanlt a smaller version.

Translated from here

Quote
Tomato Small Ceur Beef is a variety of mid-season. It produces fruits from 50 to 100 g firm flesh, sweet and acid free. Very fragrant, it will force the admiration of your guests who want more. It can be used for salads, fillings, or sauces. Rich in water, little energy, but well endowed with vitamins and minerals, tomato belongs to vegetables at very high nutritional density.
