What looks like white paint on Blueberry stalks.
« on: February 13, 2016, 10:06 »
Attaching pics. Doesn't look like the typical powdery mildew to me as there's nothing on any leaves just on the stalks and it's only on 2 bluecrops none on any pinkberrys or earliblues. I had lightly pruned them about 2 weeks before this showed up so maybe connected but not sure. Any advice appreciated.

                                               Cheers.

The branches look dead and it looks like some sort of rot. It actually looks like wet-rot that will attack damp, dead wood.

Prune those shoots right back to the stool. It will send up more shoots sometime.

Difficult to see but it looks like the last picture there is a joint with a healthy shoot, prune that shoot back to the healthy one but keep an eye on it and cut right back if the healthy shoot show symptoms. If it is wet rot it shouldn't affect living tissue.

It might be an idea to disinfect your secateurs between cuts, to avoid the risk of transferring disease to fresh wood.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Yes, I'll do that. It doesn't seem like rot as the actual branches themselves seem fine underneath the white stuff. You can just wipe the white powder off and ok underneath. It's very fine powder.

                                               Cheers.

You haven't left them on a football pitch when they were painting the lines, have you?

If you scrape a little bark off with your nail is it green beneath?

I would tell you to paint all the stems with a dilute mixture of milk and water, but I might get arrested.

Can't really tell from the pictures but it could be 'primary' powdery mildew - the form of the fungus that survives through the winter on stems, branches and in buds. I think the advice to prune out affected wood is pretty sensible whatever it is.

Most probable is powdery mildew, search:
"white powder on blueberry stems" and several references appear.

Treatment is as indicated - prune and treat with something of your choice.

Another option mentioned is Stem Blight.

What other trees are around it ?

Nothing really. Some dormant rassberry plants about 4-5 metres away and nothing else.

Removed infected areas and puffed some yellow sulphur on them so will see what happens.
