growing turmeric
« on: February 20, 2016, 14:59 »
Has anyone successfully grown turmeric? I've just been given some tubers, and have managed to find a little information about growing it but nothing very specific. I need to know:
When to plant?
do I need to chit the tubers before planting?
If not, which way up should they go in the pot?
What size pot?
Can the pot go outside after the frosts?
When will it be ready to harvest?
Thanks for any help you can give!

It looks a very attractive plant.

I would not mind trying that myself.

According to that article, they won't tolerate a temperature of less than 18* I would think that would make it a little difficult for this country?

I should think that the temperatures it needs would mean you would need to grow it under cover, and take really good care of the plant during the winter... a bit like ginger really.

The tubers can be planted horizontally I think, again just like ginger.

It might make a good pot plant. I doubt that it would be happy outside here.

Thanks for the link, that answers most of my questions. The only thing I'm not sure about is whether the plant would overwinter in my conservatory, but if not I guess I will just have to re-propagate each year (unless I decide the whole thing is too much faff to bother).
I'm going to try planting the tubers quite soon in a heated propagator and then keep the plants in the conservatory until hopefully it's warm enough to go outside in the summer. Then I'll just have to hope it stays warm enough long enough to last until harvest, which I estimate should be around December/January.
Fingers crossed.
