Last mowing date...
« on: November 01, 2015, 06:44 »
I really hope that I've done the last cut this year, but won't hold my breath...

Last week, the grass was just too long to leave, and so it had a serious seeing-to, but the mower really did struggle with the damp grass, and also picked up pounds of mud around the rotary blade! It took me a couple of hours to get it all clean!

I'll keep the strimmer on charge for any late arrivals, and may even get the little Qualcast out and do it all in stages, if I really need the exercise...

Who else is still mowing?

Yea, i did my last cut 10 days ago.. but it looks like another cut will be needed later this week as the grass is still growing.

Mine clearly needs another cut but is simply too wet  :( I may have to use the strimmer, very carefully, on the worst bits, if it doesn't dry soon

Although the grass growth is slowing down now, it will continue to grow at temps above 4C, so a little trimming will be necessary in order to keep it tidy.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Cut my lawns a couple of weeks ago, and will do another cut yet, when it's dry enough.

Very short cut today in preparation for aeration and scarifying this week, followed by a good feed.

Thank goodness I'm not on my own!

An old sage said that one should keep mowing throughout the winter, not every week of course, but enough to keep the stronger grasses down, and allow the smaller stuff to keep growing...

I really don't have a clue about what sort of grass we have here, it was an expensive seed when we bought it 27 years ago, but I'd have thought that it had 'altered' after all these years!

'The Patch' has real mongrel grass, and gets chopped to order though!

We have a few mature trees (beech and sycamore principally) so I decided to use the mower on a high setting to pick up leaves on one of the lawns. I was quite staggered as to how much grass it took off as well.

I reckon that even in these northern latitudes I'll need to keep on mowing until at least we have a hard frost

I'm in North Ayrshire and last year because we had a mild winter I was cutting the grass all year. The first cut I did this year was the 3rd of Jan because there was no frost !

Had to mow the lot over the weekend!

The Patch grass was getting very long, and would have been very difficult next year if I hadn't taken the top off, and at home and outside by the road, there were tons of leaves which meant that I had to empty the box every few seconds!

It took me all Saturday morning...

It's been so mild that it just keeps growing, I'm going to have to strim the allotment if we get a couple days of dry weather.

I strimmed my little patch of grass on Saturday, most definately a record for me! We haven't had a serious frost yet. And very pleased to say we have missed the recent deluges.

We're lucky in that we have a retired stalwart who religiously mows all the general paths down at our allotments! Of course, he gets a pint or two from us, and we always have a chat about this and that...

We had both decided that as we were only getting the wind and no rain, that it would be dry enough to cut, and it actually was, as I didn't have to do much to clean up the mower later, which is a chore in itself!

Don't want to do it again this year though...

It's really bad here now.

Far too long for a quick cut but too wet for the mower, I have 6 lawns all in a terrible state but I daren't put the rotary mower anywhere near them  :( I was considering buying a cheap lightweight hover mower I wonder if that would cope better with the wet grass?
