Leaves at end of Tomato Trusses
« on: August 10, 2015, 09:01 »
I am having real trouble with my tomatoes this year, plenty of tomatoes but so far only 1 has ripened (I have 28 plants so had expected to be harvesting by now).  I am going to pop some ripe bananas up into the PT and see does that help.  Yesterday while I was side shooting the plants I found that a number of them have developed leaves at the end of the flower trusses which I haven't seen before.  Should I cut these off to help with ripening?  I am feeding the plants once a week will this help/hinder ripening?

Sometimes leaves do grow out of the end of trusses, especially it seems on larger fruited varieties here! They seem to do no harm and I let them be if the are not shading the fruits too much.

Feeding the plants will help them carry on flowering and developing fruit, so keep going with that.

The odd weather has slowed ripening in lots of areas: there is plenty of time, so don't worry. All will be well in time  :D

If it is just a leaf then I leave them, as well.
Some of mine have developed a growing shoot - which I've snipped off when I did the armpit shoots.

They are more like the growing shoots than a leaf, I think I will chance snipping them off as they are shading the trusses a lot.

Mine are even stranger - truss, then leaf, then another truss!  Never seen that before, but this year has been a hard one for tomatoes in my experience.  Healthy plants but no fruit!  Except this one variety, lemon pear, that is doing the double truss!

Mine have always grown a shoot and leaves at the end of a truss. I always just cut them off as they are usually pretty weak looking and serve no purpose
