Herb plants- when to plant out?
« on: January 18, 2008, 13:41 »
Hi

My new herb bed is ready for planting. I popped into Wilkinson’s today and picked up a good batch of herb plants (3 for £5 btw), including mint, sage, lemon thyme, lavender and rosemary. The plants seem very healthy, measuring about 10~12inches high (including pots) with plenty of new growth coming through.

When would be the best time to replant them into the raise bed in my garden? Is it too early? If it is too early, where is the best place to store them? I have a utility room with a glass roof that is quite cool, I could simply leave them in there for now, do you think I should re-pot them?

Thanks.
We lived for days on nothing but food and water.

These plants tend to be grown on the soft side, I'd leave them in mentioned room till spring.

Also would be tempted to put them in to some multipurpose compost.

What do you mean by 'grown on the soft side'?

Don't know where you are, but keep them in until the danger of frosts has passed. Middle to late March?

Indoors and not properly hardened off, often with heat, so not hardy, but soft.

This question will arise again so would you mind please updating your profile for us all?  Instructions in Help Topics in my signature.

I'd be looking to harden off the mint, sage, lemon thyme and get them outside as soon as possible.  Take a bit longer over the lavender and rosemary.

You're a bit slow WG, it was already done

So, you say get them out asap, scribbler says leave them indoors 'til late March.  :?

Next!  :D

Thanks guys, I will keep them in for now but look to get them out soon.

I think, everybody is suggesting here, that they need hardening off, before planting out.

WG is saying, what he is saying, because mint, sage and lemon thyme are hardy perennials.

I have reservations as to how they were raised. That's all.

Sorry - what I meant was protect them from frost. Either by keeping indoors till risk is minimsed, or put them outside somewhere sheltered (eg porch, greenhouse, cold frame, sheltered patio) when the worst of the frosts have passed.

Sorry to confusticate.

BTW WG I'd have them the other way round. Lavender and rosemary would be more resistant I would have thought.

I love it when we all agree
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Depends on variety, I've lost a few lavender and rosemary plants 2 years ago, I think.

i'd say keep the little ones in a cold frame for a few weeks - although i was out in the garden having a mooch and i see my mint and chives are sprouting up well - but then it isn't so much cold as bl@@dy sopping wet here

as for buying mint - well  :? i am sure many of us lovely forum members could have sent you a few nice roots
