Andy, if it were me I would cut half down like you suggest, and feed both sections with Sulphate of Potash or Rose fertiliser about February, or as soon as the ground thaws if we get a hard winter. This helps flower formation.

A mulch of rotted manure or home made compost, applied when the ground is fairly wet, with help keep the roots moist. Don't put it on when the ground is dry though!

If the Spring is dry, a good watering every two weeks or so will keep things moving.

As Headgardener said, Autumn fruiters will flower earlier on last year's growth, but you can expect the new canes to flower too. If this happens, then they are certainly Autumn Fruiters, but if they are mis-labelled and are really a Summer variety, you will not get any flowers on the new canes.

You can get this sorted out so don't give up on them!!

You are saying they look really nice and healthy. In that case I would leave them alone , besides the general tidying up like thinning away the smaller growth. I think you will be right with the possibility they are actually a summer fruiting variety. I think it unlikely that they will not produce if they are strong and we'll grown

All the best,

Maarten
