Bean seedlings - duff batch?
« on: June 02, 2015, 09:11 »
This year I'm growing just a few beans to have in a large pot due to limited space. I've sown a few Cobras (which I grew last year, so the seeds are a year old), and they sprung up nicely and look good.

I've also sown some Blue Lake (brand new seeds) but they look a bit duff. One looks ok, but much smaller than the Cobras, and the other two look distinctly gimpy (a bit lop-sided, only one small, good leaf). Could it just be a bad batch? Or will they catch up? I've attached a photo - Cobras being the larger plants in the green pots.

Should I give them another go? Or chuck all the seeds out?

They just look small and no doubt will grow, especially if you give them a feed. Not all bean seedlings are huge and robust, so my advice would be to press on, not throw them out  :)

Agree with Sunny - you do get the odd bean seedling which appears to have had a rough time poking its head above the soil, but as long as it's a healthy green colour and has a growing tip it should be OK.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

It's never a good idea to compare growth between different varieties, either  ;)

They usually all get there in the end - just at different speed  :D

(like kids, there's always a slowcoach or 2 )
