Lark sweetcorn
« on: May 10, 2015, 14:12 »
I sowed Lark sweetcorn a few weeks ago. There were forty seeds in the pack, they were all planted in similar deep pots, to the same depth and with the same compost. Only 30 have germinated. 10 seems to be  quite a high failure rate. Has anyone else had similar results.

I grew Lark last year and only about two thirds germinated, despite chitting on wet paper faffing. This year I have Butterscotch and 100%, with just poking them straight in to the compost in pots.

Be interested to see what others' say.

Lovely sweetcorn though, the Lark was  :D

Gosh, that's a shame for both of you. Lark is my regular sweetcorn and I very rarely get failures, even with old(ish) seed.

95% success rate with Lark. Chitted first then moved into pots.

Some do indeed take a while longer to emerge - but in the end I only had 4 from the packet which failed completely - so don't give up on them yet.

I sow two to a pot as usual then nip out the smaller one. I keep them indoors until they germinate and just about all of mine have come up. I have also had success with older seeds so am unsure what is causing this problem.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Thank you for everyone's comments - still no sign of the errant sweetcorn - still 30 plants is not too bad.

It should be enough to get a plentiful supply of cobs I think  :D

Have a furtle in the pot to see if there is any sign of life.

Well I had a little furtle - and it looks as if a couple more are just starting to germinate but the rest are just sitting there doing nothing. If any more germinate well and good, if not I will be happy with what I have got.  :D
