Microgreens anybody?
« on: February 15, 2015, 16:33 »
Always loved those tiny vegetables in frozen stirfry's and looked up about microgreens which appear to be certain veg harvested as a very young plant and fancied having a try.

Apparently can be done indoors in any old type of containers on your windowsill even and even done on a regular basis most of the year.

Anybody do this?

Yes, I grow a mix of rocket, coriander, and chinese greens in a piece of guttering in the greenhouse.  Nice to use to decorate special meals and the taste seems more intense.

It's like going back to our childhood, growing cress in eggshells and inkwells :D  i don't really enjoy the mouthfeel of them and prefer to let them grow on a bit.  I don't mind as a garnish

I was under the impression of sweet tasting full of flavour vegetables, am I wrong and they are too much trouble or of no flavour?

I remember blotting paper and mustard and cress  :D  God that was a long long time ago now.  :(

I like the idea.  What do people grow them in?  Multi purpose compost?

That's what I use. Snip the leaves off regularly, and they last for ages.  Going to sow beetroot for mini leaves too this year.

Yes I just use multi purpose or at the end of the year the compost I've had the toms & cucs in. I sow a mix of old lettuce seeds, Chinese leaves, beetroot. As ghost says you can cut & come again for a few cuts. If the weather turns warmer I've been known to separate a few & plant out individually for bigger crops.

A few years ago, Allys Fowler sowed years old pea seed from her kitchen cupboard and used the crop as pea shoots, we tried it and the flavour was great, very intense pea flavour, Dave

I did this with the dried peas you use for soup and added them to salads, very tasty

Thanks all.  I think it all depends on the mix of veg which gives it it's taste or not as not all veg suits this set up.
