Strawberries gone for a walk!
« on: January 12, 2015, 10:15 »
I planted 10 strawberry plants the other day. At the weekend I was up the allotment and have found three of the plants are no longer where I left them!  There are now three perfect holes where the plants were planted.  No chewed stalks, or leaves and no roots at all!  It's as if they have just got up and left!

Any ideas what could have caused this? I cant think thieves would have bothered with taking three out of 10 small plants and from the middle of the row too, so I can only assume some animal has had a good munch!!  No idea what likes small strawberry plants though.

Wouldn't they just go for the berries?  I was hoping not to have to build my fruit cage for a good few months yet!!

Did you add compost when planting, or as a mulch?

Blackbirds can't resist tossing promising looking organic material about to see if there are any worms or bugs underneath, and your strawberry plants won't have had time to anchor themselves in properly, so if anything disturbed them they may well have got blown away by the strong winds we've had lately.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

They were planted through membrane, but could have been lifted and blown I suppose. I'll have to go and have a hunt around, but as you say, with the strong winds lately they could be anywhere!!
