Chicory/Witloof
« on: December 07, 2014, 17:47 »
Just had a trip to Belgium and every meal seemed to be accompanied by Witloof. I enjoyed it. I believe we call it Chicory or even Belgian Chicory. Is it easy to grow? Any advice please.
Taken over neglected veg garden at new home. Enemy number 1 Ground Elder. Then there is the furry terror - bunnies - to contend with!
Made a start have beds established but moved in too late for serious planting. We shall see what 2015 brings.

It's a long process and you'll have to start it next year.  You first of all grow some chicory from seed and the. In the autumn dig it up and cut the tops off and plant them up into largish pots and then cover them.  I keep mine in my shed down the allotment.  About twelve weeks or so later you can harvest the white shoots that have grown.  About March time.  Is it worth it?  No, not really!  But they do em to taste sweeter than shop bought ones.
