Anyone grown these apples?
« on: November 26, 2014, 11:03 »
I am looking for something to replace my deceased Bramley apple tree. It will need to be happy in the peak district and taste is important; my husband is famous for his apple cake! It also needs to be happy in an organic garden with no pesticides/fungicides.

The following have been recommended. Has anyone any experience of growing these and if so which would be best?

Beauty of Kent. keeps its shape when cooked; excellent flavour, so good for pies.
Winter Greening. Also good flavour and keeps shape; no need for sugar
Golden Noble. Mid season so excellent with blackberries. Softens completely; makes excellent baked apples.
Beauty of Hants.  Dual Purpose, so no need for sugar. Keeps shape cooked.
Newton Wonder. Vigorous; prolific cropper. Cooks to fluffy puree. Dual purpose.
Kentish Fillbasket. Very large apples. Vigorous trees; good crops. Cooks to puree.

I have also had Bardsley suggested.

For apple cake you could do no better than Gradpa Buxton. Best cooker out there as far as I am concerned. Cooks to a light fluffy texture and doesn't really need sweetening. Doesn't keep beyond December so you have to peel and freeze for later usage but it's worth the effort

I like a firmer apple for apple cake, not a puree one.  I am in derbyshire and have howgate wonder and a cox.  HG is an eater and a cooker

I don't spray mine or anything but they do look sometimes as if they could do with it when they are suffering from aphid infestation
The important thing is to not bash the trunks with the lawn mower as that can let disease in.  Keeping a clear 3 foot diameter around the base of the tree is a good plan so the new trees are not competing with lawn for nutrients and it keeps the mower clear of it.  Protecting tree trunks from rabbit attack is also a good idea.  Rabbits have killed two of my young trees when heavy snow has drifted up the trunks and provided a ladder for the pesky varmints

I keep saying I will spray them but never do. I don't like the thought of harming bees.  I love bees on my plot

Well my Bramleys have it on a regular basis but my Grandpa Buxton has not had any at all after 15 years or more.
