Well that's it then. I'm on clay. My parsnips grow 5 inches wide and 3 inches long. :(

I have those too - cook and taste the same, and seem easier to peel in my opinion  :) I don't bother dibbing or filling holes with compost.

Oops I've got a pot of it waiting to be planted. Are you saying I shouldn't?  I fancied making my own horseradish sauce.

I've got mine in a 42L trug, with the drainage holes drilled into the sides so it can't escape. It's prolific on our site, and in the wilderness along the river so I guess I needn't have bothered.  ::)

I put it on a tarp when I turn the pot out to harvest, none of the soil/compost goes anywhere near my beds.

Somehow my runner beans are going to mysteriously fail next year. I hate the ruddy things but my missus seems to think they are an essential part of allotmenteering. Well if that's the case, why does everyone seem to be hell-bent on giving the damned things away!

French climbers on the other hand are a different story ...

A chap on our site used to grow 4 double rows 20/30ft long, goodness knows what he did with them all, he could have kept all of Burbage & Hinckley supplied. He gave up 1 plot last years so only has half as many now.

The beauty of French Climbers is that the plants die off about now when you've had enough anyway. Runners on the other hand keep going until winter, long after you've become sick and tired of them

:)  I have 6 Runner plants on the end of my French Bean row - just to fill in the gap after the Frenchies stop producing.  My French Flat Beans have already stopped, but the tubular Haricot ones still have a bit more to give ... although I think they might have given up more through lack of water than cold - Oops! My fault!

We never get tired of them.
Absolutely love them.  And they are a very necessary ingredient to piccalilli. Mr Bee's favourite relish.

And as to what not to grow...... summer squash, the patty pan variety. A tasteless mouthful of nothing.
Over wintering onions and garlic are two others we are not going to bother with again.

I love Patty Pans roast in the oven with chilli flakes or in a Mexican squash stew.
