i am in the SE and tried, against advise, to grow tatas and toms, but got devestated by blight.
i have room at home to do pot toms but not tatas.
thanks

I thought you would get a lot of replies to this one. A lot of varieties are recommended for being more blight tolerant than others, beware though, it's usually not complete resistance, just tolerance. Will get foliage blight on most of them, but losing that, you can save the tubers.

An early main crop(ex Sante) might be a safer bet though.

every year i grow Charlotte (2nd early waxy salad) and Valor (early main crop).

Charlotte gets dug before blight strikes.

Valor did get blight but much later on than other folks on the site whose spuds were decimated.  Chopped the haulm off at the first sign of trouble and when digging the tubers later on had just one that was blighted, the rest were fine and are storing well, just as usual.  if you love roasties, valor is the spud for you.

in organic gardening catalogue the blight resistant selection is made up as follows:-
Colleen (early)
Orla (early)
Milva (early maincrop)
Robinta (early maincrop)
Valor (early maincrop)

other varieties noted as being blight resistant are:-
Lady Balfour
Sante
Premiere
Cosmos
Sarpo Mira
Cara
Arran Victory
Verity
Bambino
Gardening organically on chalky, stony soil.

I'd always select tattie variety on flavour and never on any other aspect of performance.  Red Duke of York, Rogues, Kerr's Pink, Pink Fir Apple for me.

Also, you should have a plan in place to combat blight regadless of the variety grown

I got blight badly as well this year, esp my pink fur apples. I think (after a couple of long years of experience) the best plan is to go for earlies that will grow on if left in. Then they can be eaten as earlies AND left in as maincrop so that if the weather is looking blighty they can be dug up asap.

Is there a spud that doesn't suffer from blight ??   :?

Although it's a 2nd early Marfona is often grown for a late crop !!  Seems to be very popular too !

I grew Valour this year wa very late getting it in and it did brilliantly and so healthy too  :D
