Anyone growing flowers on their veg plot
« on: January 12, 2008, 20:00 »
Hi just wondered if anyone grows flowers, my other half has asked if we can grow some, I have a large spare area about 40 foot by 20 foot that I only keep rotorvated to keep weed free. Any idea on what type of plants to grow from seed would help. I am not on an allotment my veg area is on a friends smallholding, so I have a nice size plot for my veg and fruit, so space is not a problem.

Sweet peas and Pinks are my faves, they make lovely cut flowers and smell delightful.

You HAVE to grow Night Scented Stock, especially if you are there in the early evening.

It's an amazing plant and a FANTASTIC and BEAUTIFULLY scented flowers. I've bought loads of seeds and give them out to friends. They should also be used more in public displays.

Try looking under Dianthus, Suzi, this also includes Carnations and Sweet Williams. T&M do them by the bucketload. :D

I bought Sarah Raven's book "The Great Vegetable Plot" yesterday and it was really inspiring in terms of planting flowers with veggies. As my plot is in my garden i want it to be beautiful as well as functional - I particularly liked her hazel tunnel whch is covered in sweet peas in the summer and squash in the autumn. I was planning some some sort of tunnel over a path as a rat run for the kiddies so this might be a way of mixing the two. My only issue is last night I couldn't find anyone who coppiced hazel un Cheshire - maybe it's not very popular here. I don't want to do willow because it's quite invasive and will set down rooys easily.

Hi Peter

Yes we grow flowers for cutting and just to look nice in bits we can't use to grow veg. Not sure but I thinktechnically you are supposed to have half the plot for veg To be honest I can't see anyone complaining if it is under cultivation

Good Luck  Have a look for Sarah Raven's book  I think it's called the Cutting Garden
