Best or easiest way to grow pea shoots?
« on: August 07, 2014, 18:22 »
Can't say I'm a natural candidate for growing 'micro greens' but I do have a collection of saved sugarsnap pea seeds which after this year's harvest now goes back 5 years, and some of them are clearly in danger of going to waste.

As per title, can they be sprouted in a similar way to mustard and cress, or do they need soil (and if so, how much?)

Any info will be much appreciated.  ;)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Try not to get carried away as I did - a trayful of pea shoots is a LOT. Unless you're feeding a big family I'd start with a half size seed tray, or less, sown thinly.

Though I did discover that once cut they keep very well in a plastic bag in the fridge for a very long time...

They do ok in a bean sprouted on the windowsill, like cress, in just water.

Thanks for the replies - looks like a small scale experiment is called for, with two containers, one with, and one without compost. Probably something to try indoors in autumn/winter when not much is growing outside.  ;)

Actually you just reminded me and I've planted up a winter trough today with some Lidl cut & come lettuce seedlings again and some pea seeds chucked in alongside  :D thanks.

We have them on the go most of the year- 6 inch pot, bit of compost, large handful of 'Bigga marrow fat peas' sold in supermarkets for boiling up a mushypeas
2 weeks later generous crop of pea shoots

Normally get 2-3 crops per pot, then the compost etc goes into the compost bin.

We love peashoot risotto, so will eat them by the ton!

Been doing them in the cold frame at the mo, as they mature slightly quicker than the ones sat on the patio.

Nom nom nom, guess what's for dinner!
Very often quite lost- would be more lost if I could work out where I was!- But always find my way home.....
