Thanks folks.

Just back from the plot - found some of my leeks dying off. Had a look and sure enough two more nests of little brown ants. Whole bloomin colonies of them. Dug as much as I could out and dumped it in a trug of water, like I did before.

I might have a go at those Home Defence Antstop granules, mobilekat. Does it say on the packet that it treats all ants? I realised after buying it that the Nippon gel stuff is only for treating black ants.

I've may have discovered the main disadvantage of using black ground cover on the plot - the ants love building their villages under it (although the first nest was under a whitecurrant bush which was uncovered.

We have been using it on the brown ants- and they have either moved out, or died!

The label just says 'ants'

Its an Spinosad insecticide, and can be used either as the granules, or they can be dissolved in water and poured over the nest

from my research it good at killing insects without being too toxic to mammals- they use a version of it for head-lice!

In theory its the same stuff as Nippon, But I have found it works better!

Very often quite lost- would be more lost if I could work out where I was!- But always find my way home.....

Great- I hope they work on the 'East Devon Ants' as well as they do the 'Exeter Ants'!
