What do I do with dwarf green beans?
« on: June 07, 2014, 10:31 »
Hi everyone - I have some young dwarf green beans, but they didn't come with instructions... and I've never grown them before, so have no idea what to do with them, can anyone help please?
Do they need supports? If so how do I do it?? Do they climb? Thanks - sorry for all the questions - I'm still learning

If they are dwarfs they wont climb just pop them in and let them do what they do best. Pick once you can see the beans.

Someone else maybe more scientific but not here.

If you plant them close in the row, they support themselves. It's best to pick them before the pods get too bumpy.

First year I planted them I put up a row of 5ft canes, I assumed the dwarf referred to the beans being small!, they looked ridiculous when they reached their full height of a foot :)

a foot high with beans dropping vertically down all round, you can get a 9" or longer bean, but most will be 4" to 6".
last year I did a mixed bean and pea planting and my dwarf beans filled the gap at the bottom of the sticks, I generally put one row of sticks in a bed, with 5 rows of peas/ beans, when I can be bothered the dwarfs are the outside rows (they are a pain to get to if they are in the middle - through the rest of the foliage).

No - they're like little "bushes" which tend to have flowers produced on the first growth, then other stems are produced from the bottom that also flower, then you get the beans later on from these. They do flower very prolifically and you get lots of beans from one plant. The more you harvest them, the more they produce until they run out of steam later on in the summer. As MOS said, pick them before they go "bumpy" - i.e. forming seeds in the pod, or they will start to slow down in production. I do it when they are about 4" long and have thickened out a bit and look like the ones you buy. I love them! I prefer to grow them in my GH, plus doing a climbing one again this year with purple pods, as they grow straight and don't curl like ones that I tried outside.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Plant about a foot apart in the row. Keep on picking and they will keep on producing beans. We like them tiny. Some say that is wastfull but that is our choice.

First new potatoes, first carrots, first peas, first beans. What treats we have coming!

OOPS!!!! I've done the same as you've described! Yes I've put canes up and wondered why they weren't really climbing...nevermind it means I've got somewhere to hang discs to deter birdies

i find the ones i have can leave the beans on the floor and promote rot and get dirty. i put canes in and loosely tie the hole plant in with string to pick it up a bit and get the beans off the floor.

this may just be my variety though
