Sweetcorn: adventitious roots or pot too small?
« on: June 01, 2014, 08:32 »
Photo attached - are these adventitious roots that can be buried under the soil level when planting out?

- or do I really need to pot these on to a larger pot before planting out as the plants appear to be climbing out of their 6 inch root trainers?

- the plant leaves are between 5 and 8 inches from soil level to tip.

Looks like a miniature version of what normally happens after they are planted out rather than before, which suggests they may be pushing themselves out of the compost.

Where you are I expect you are planning on hardening them off and planting them out very soon - I wouldn't bother re-potting, and I would cover the roots when they do go outside - they help anchor the plants.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Plant them out now. Plant them at the same level.

To contradict, I always bury plenty of stem. They will throw out roots right up the stem if buried. This gives plants that are much more stable in winds too.

Thanks - good to get some different views before making my next move.

I am hardening off this week, so I am looking to get these out next weekend and will bury to at least where those adventitious roots are showing to gain more anchorage.
