Lots of leaves but small roots
« on: June 21, 2008, 16:01 »
All my vegetables are heading skyward and have produced lots of top growth and look great but, on digging up some - e.g. cauliflowers - the roots are very small; however my root crops of potatoes, beetroots and turnips have bulked up fine. Also, my onions (mainly the red variety) have bolted badly. Any ideas as to why would be much appreciated.
I grow on exposed reclaimed farm land by the sea with a maximum depth of 6-8" top soil on top of marsh silt sub-soil. I use raised beds topped up this year with bought in top soil to raise the depth. My soil pH is neutral, added top soil pH is alkaline. For soil improvement I use sheep manure layered on in autumn plus my own compost which includes poultry droppings. Could be excess nitrogen but our land was flooded in winter so I would have thought it would have mostly been washed out.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

You say the roots are small, they're not also bloated & fat by any chance?
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Interestingly my red onions have bolted too.  Most other things seem OK though.  Will be watching out for others thoughts :?

Think I read that red onions are(more) prone to bolting ... so I bought heat-treated ones ... apparently this means they shouldn't bolt ... so far so good here  :D

Thinking along the same lines that may be an imbalance in soil nutrients. No - the roots were fine and I don't have club root - thank God! To Aunt Sally who asked why I dug some up - they were for my dinner! Thanks for your help.
