Runner bean info needed
« on: April 28, 2014, 20:26 »
Hi all.
I have taken over a new plot and I have no manure to spread, I was wondering if I could put
chicken manure pellets in the planting hole with my runner bean plants in a few weeks time?
would it be too strong for them?.
                                          many thanks Brianc.

I would use normal general purpose fertilizer or BFB..
Now a member of the 10 Ton club.... 2013  harvested 588 Kg from 165 sq mt..

It won't do any harm - I do the same for anything I plant  ;)

If they're anything like 6X pellets, Brian, like Mumofstig says, just do it!

Beans love all sorts of trenching muck, newspapers, and old brassica stems, but a good feed like that is a good idea! We do it!

Don't forget also, to keep watering them with something similar, as they'll go mad at that!

Nettle tea on its way.  Will that do for the beans?  Haven't quite grasped which plants like which kind of food yet

Nettle tea is one of the very best things for runners. That and liquid sheep manure ;)

Does that involve hoisting a sheep with an upset stomach over the planting trench?

Nooo - You invite the sheep for Tea and hope he drops some little poos on the floor - you then sweep them up and add to the trench  :D :D

Sheep currently in field next door to the plot!   Seriously, do I just add water and leave to dissolve then use to water the beans?    Do you dilute it?   Perhaps I should alternate with the nettle tea?   Keen to get the best from the beans now OH has built me a munty frame.

hi if you can get grasscuttings without weedand feed they make good feed for runnerbeans we dig a trench 2feet deep 18"wide 9feet long 2or 3 barrow loads of grasscuttings go in and firmed down then a perforated drain pipe laid on top the soils fiiled backin ,let to settle  then the canes put in  2 bags of grass cuttings are put in an old solid wheelbarrow watered  and left for a couple of weeks we get 3 gallons of dark brown liquer this goes down the perforated pipe  with 9 gallons of water, the beans soon reach the top of the canes, last year from first picking we had 60 pounds of beans  jezza

I have a big bag of grass cuttings just looking for a reason to be  8) and an inviting trench.... but won't it just do that grass-pancake thing it does in the compost bin if it gets compacted?

Grass cuttings will not make a good feed, as there is very little in the way of nutrients in them, so please don't rely on grass cuttings to nourish your plants. They will however, assist in the trench by way of moisture retention.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Do you just pick up the droppings and chuck them on the soil, or do you make a tea?  Is there a receipe please?

Tie them in a hessian sack, throw it in a barrel of water.

Set up a total exclusion zone of at least 100m.

Let it brew for a few days and use diluted on your plants.
