is it worth planting some lettuces on the allotment or will they get eaten by slugs, snails, pigeons we dont get many slugs or snails as the soil is fairly sandy.

i have sown way to many for my small pollytunnel  blush

SK

What would you use the space for otherwise? I always have some lettuces available to fill in where I've picked. If you need the space for something else, they make good compost!

Chickens love them too.

I'm just getting prepared to put my lettuce/salad stuff in, hopefully out of the way of slugs and snails :)

Mine do just fine outside, unless there happens to be a wireworm around as they head straight for lettuce roots it seems

Mine are getting crucified on the veg patch. My stepdad has got a great idea. Get any old table, preferably sturdy, low and long. Put a couple of planters, or large pots on the table, and put the legs (the table legs, not yours!) in containers of water. The slugs cannot cross these 'moats' without drowning. Do you think a moat would work round a raised bed?

I never thought of that! Could you imagine going to all that trouble to find there are 10000 slug eggs waiting to hatch out in the soil/compost! Arrrgggghhhhh!!!
