Pinching out peas?
« on: March 11, 2014, 10:06 »
I have always pinched out the tops of mangetoute and sugar snap peas (the only ones I grow) but an allotment neighbour told me that is not considered the best way to go these days?  Any advice?

Hi GG. I've never done it but that doesn't mean to say its right. I get why  you would  do it though. Looking forward to replies.  :)
I have my own cement mixer and not afraid to use it!!

In years gone by a man would be employed by the farmer to go along all the rows of peas with a thin 'switch', to take the tops out of the pea plants with a quick swipe. This encouraged the plants to bush out, and increased the crop. Maybe with modern varieties there is no need to do this.
