Rooting Cornus
« on: February 03, 2014, 10:27 »
Hi Everyone!  I just trimmed back my newly planted Cornus Baton Rouge.  I took the off cuts and bunged them in some water on a sunny (okay, semi - sunny, sorta, with luck)  ::)window sill.  I swear I see hair roots starting - am I being obsessive with my magnifiying glass?  It's been three days.
When I die I will slide in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand and chocolate in the other, screaming, "Whooo hooo!  What a ride!" as life is to be enjoyed to the fullest!

Cornus roots very easily, especially if branches are allowed to droop onto the soil, as I have found when I haven't pruned them all back. It sounds a bit soon, but see how it looks later on this week.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Thank you, Goose Girl!  I'll be sure to give this method a go when it gets big enough!  Great!  ;)

They could well strike successfully in water -- just pot them up gently if they do, and free plants will be yours  ;)

I have about 40 red and 80 green cuttings planted in a grow bag, I hope to make a fence boundary from them

Wow!  Do you have them outside?  Cornus would make a beautiful border, wouldn't it?

Thats a great topic for me.I bought a baton rouge a couple of days ago and was looking at it in its pot and thinking that there was a lot of cutting material on it if they were obliged to take root quite easily.Hardwood cuttings I thinks before some lunch

Hi LittleRedHen,
Yes Just leave them outside for the whole season and pot them up individually this time next year. I hope to train a few as half standards
